Female solidarity, or lack thereof, is an important theme in Tennessee Williams’Streetcar Named Desire and Lillian Hellman’s Toys in the Attic. However, relations between females—mothers, sisters, friends—is sometimes fraught with conflict which is often the result of a sense of betrayal. Compare and contrast the complex relation between Blanche and Stella in Streetcar with the relation between Anna and Carrie in Toys. Address the themes of maternal loss and maternity in the narratives, as well as the significance of the presence of men in the works.
